I do not give just a review and then the exam a week later. The format for my BJCP Preparation Class is four three hour classes one night a week. We sample each of the AHA/HWBTA styles available during the classes. The format is: Class 1: Ingredients Class 2: Process Class 3: Flavor Perception Class 4: How to be a judge The goal here being to touch on everything that you could need to know to take the exam. This effort has been part of the BURP ongoing education program. Out of the two classes we have had 32 BURPers take the exam. The first exam had 14 takers and 12 passers. I have been very pleased with the results. The comments that I have gotten have pointed to an over emphasis on Ingredients and Process to the detriment of Flavor Perception and Judging Procedures. However, after the exam folks thought the relative emphasis was appropriate. The next time I teach the class I think that I will do the order: Flavor Perception, Judging, Ingredients and Process. If anyone is interested I have MS Power Point slides for this class. I could give them to you in .ppt or Postscript format. I was wondering if anyone here could help identify the fault. The beer was a bottled Bass served warm (65F/18C) in a clean pint glass. It seemed a little redder than I recalled it to have been in the past. When I held it to my nose, I thought I could detect a "scotch" aroma that was slightly acrid. This also came through in the tasting -- it tasted like someone had added a shot of harsh, cheap bar scotch. I drank most of it to educate my palate. The bartender also tasted it and confirmed that "Its not right" (I knew that!) and gave me a refund. This morning, this off-flavour is repeating on me most unpleasantly.
