The BJCP exam is being given on 1 April in O'Fallon, IL (just outside St. Louis). We have been assured by Pat Baker and James Spence that this will not be a problem for either of their judge-accrediting organizations. Scoring will be as it always has been. Maybe the AHA is trying to implement 'what has been discussed here on a regular basis'. It seems to me that the bitching and moaning about the way the BJCP is setup/run has been going on for some time now. Not a single change has taken place, with the exception of _some_ style guideline changes. Maybe the existing BJCP, for whatever reason, couldn't or wouldn't make these changes. It's something to atleast think about. And think about it with an open mind. The AHA may not be as evil as some suggest. > Why weren't the judges surveyed when problems were first perceived? While I do not feel that John Dale's post was appropriate and I appreciate all the work that Pat Baker has done for the BJCP, there is one part of the current BJCP exam that really frosts my behind: entering your previous score on the exam form. I'm sorry Pat, I must disagree with your statement above -- each exam should be judged the same no matter if the person previously got an 89, a 60 or never took the exam before. I cannot think of any valid need for that information and feel that it can only bias the exam scorer if this information is made available to the scorer. If indeed this information is NOT known by the scorer, then I apologize in advance. In any event, this post may make you aware of the fact that this question on the exam form raises some suspicions. Thanks for the info, Steve Stroud ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 28 Feb 95 15:10:43 EST From: chuck at synchro.com (Chuck Cox) Subject: database format I will be the interim database administrator for the BJCP when the database is transferred from the AHA. It is very likely that many of the database administration chores will be distributed to regional administrators in the near future. Should that happen, it is important that we have a reasonably common and/or portable database format. I assume the regional databases will be run on donated systems, so it should ideally be supported by Unix, PC and Mac software. I would like to take a quick informal survey. If you are willing to donate some of your disk space and time to maintaining a regional subset of the BJCP database, please contact me via personal email and list the database formats you can import and export, in order of desirability. I don't want to get into any hardware or software religious wars. Please respond only if you are serious about donating your equipment and time for at least a year. As a non-voting member of the BJCC, it is probable that >I didn't see all of the paperwork that the committee generated. >However, I am doubtful of Karen's statement regarding financing >the elections - I was involved in discussing the financing >question and don't recall ever seeing a letter or memo >from Karen or anyone on the AHA staff that suggested that the >AHA would give money to the program for the elections. That's because the offer was not made "officially" nor in writing. Karen made the offer durring a discussion she and I had concerning the adoption of a BJCP charge to the AHA sanctioned competitions of $1 per judge to maintain the experience point database (just as the HWBTA pays). I was talking about formalizing this payment as a means to finance the elections and Karen indicated she would prefer to pay the election costs directly rather than accept the $1 per judge charge. She felt the paperwork involved would create hardships for the organizers and be more cumbersome than it was worth. I did not relay this offer since I expected it would be made as a counter offer to my FORMAL proposal of the $1 per Judge plan. All this happened in late December (Steve, check my letter dated 12/20/94 to the BJCC) and the proposal did not get a chance to be "discussed" by the BJCC prior to the AHA announcement of the removal of their sponsorship in January. If any one wants to take issue with the message not reaching the BJCC I guess you'll have to blame me. My intention was that it would be presented at a later time. ***** As for the resignation of the existing BJCC: I do not agree that anything but delays will be created by such an action as outlined by Mr. Stevens. We understand the dynamics and will be better suited to make the transition go smoothly. I promise that the field judges will all get their chance to participate in the process. If that doesn't happen then I will resign.
