One of the main things of any organization is its purpose. As we are not privy to the purpose of the organization as they are part of the articles of incorporation which were not included with the by laws how can we determine whether or not these by-laws warrant a yes vote. In the current by-laws there is no provision for accepting new members into the program. There is an error in article 2.5 of the by-laws that makes it invalide. The by-laws assumes that all of us want to be a member in the BJCP. I feel that this is not a bad concept just one that we each should have the option to affirm. Any spelling errors in the above are not nearly as bad as the errors in the by-laws we have to vote on. I am, however, concerned about Ginger's (and numerous others') suggestion that different guidelines be implemented. Face it, Folks! The AHA owns the only guidelines which are available to the general brewing population. Entrants use those guidelines to design their beers. Even if we on the net agree that a particular guideline should be different, most brewers won't get the word. Sending the revised guidelines with the competition's entry packet doesn't work, since it usually comes too late for anyone to make a brew specifically for the event. Even if there is time, there is little incentive to brew just to enter one event when all the others follow AHA. Unique guidelines may demonstrate an organizer's depth of brewing knowledge, but it basically is an invitation to potential entrants to stay away from the uniquely described categories. We've tried it at the Capitol District Open, and I'm convinced that it isn't effective. Ginger can point to the Xmas success in St. Louis, but she also is aware that they've found a neat niche that many brewers look forward to each year. Then again, their category does allow for specialties which can be entered in other events. Strong arguments for guideline revision need an agreed upon BJCP procedure for review and presentation to James Spence. The AHA, through Zymurgy, reaches a very wide audience. The network segment of the BJCP is only a tiny portion of that audience. Finding ways to work closely with the AHA sometimes seems to be working. Guidelines do change. The Sugar Grove Corn Boil is thinking about hosting a competition and I want to see if there are any conflicts. Does anyone know of a good site that contains a calendar of competitions?
