Some mix of usage is apparently out there. Top down was reference to management or computer program design where the over all goal is established and the components are designed consistent with that goal. ie a "39" now lets see about flavor. bottom up is where the components are designed and the overall design is taken from the sum ofthe components. I suspect a cronic problem with confused newbies to the judging world with this terminology as the specific judging form tends to dominate our mindset rather than general philosophies from alien fields. I wholeheartly concur. I judged at the Dock Street Homebrew Competition a couple weeks ago and they said they were AHA sanctioned; of course the judges were BJCP judges. Or were they? Seems many (too high a percentage) were not in the (or any) judge program at all. There were too many novices and others who had never judged. The troubling issue with this competition was they didn't use the AHA or BJCP guidelines for beer styles in the competition; they simple had categories like porter and stout, ales under 1050, ales over 1050, etc. To top it off, they were/are not going to return the score sheets. If anyone wanted their feedback (for which they paid $7.50 for the first entry) they were going to have to show up at their brewpub to pick them up. I for one put in too much effort into providing feedback to the brewer only to find out they weren't going to send them back to the brewers. If their policies don't change for next year, I won't be judging there and I'd encourage other BJCP judges to do the same. We need to set some minimum guidelines for competitions that are BJCP sanctioned or use BJCP judges. I encourage these guidelines to be adopted by both the AHA and the BJCP.
