An excellent point for discussion.

I'm not exactly sure, but it sounds as if you are suggesting that a mead 
judge detract from the score if he/she thinks the mead is too young. Isn't 
this adding an additional personal bias to the judging? Shouldn't the entry 
be judged on its own merits?

One (of the many) things I have learned from your own mead making skills is 
the fine art of blending meads for competitions. Wouldn't that obviate your 
concern? Hown could the judge evaluate the age of a blended mead?
