Trust me that is not the case here. The case is usually I am welcomed as someone without a full days worth of palate fatique that can come in fresh and objective. I tested and became a judge long before opening the store. Frankly I do miss getting out and about to meet brewers and judges. The program as announced, if I plan a pub crawl I can get "points" for what typically would end up a drink-a-thon; yet stay busy starting new brewers and teaching the difference between American brown and English brown doesn't count for anything? NL ---------------------------------------------------------------------- From: Diane Catanzaro Date: Wed, 18 Jan 2006 09:56:45 -0500 Subject: please post on judgenet! Hi and Happy New Year BJCP Judges! The Hampton Roads Brewing & Tasting Society is sponsoring the ultimate showdown between British and American versions of the same styles.... The Transatlantic Showdown.......... American vs English Barleywine!!! Which style will reign supreme? The English Browns compete head-to-head with the American Brown.......it's two-on-one and who will score the knockout punch? "Our Pale Ale can whip your Pale Ale!!" "Can NOT!" "Can TOO!" To make it a fair fight we need some great judges. That's where you come in! We need judges and stewards who can participate in making this contest a success. And of course you are invited to enter your homebrews of any of the styles in this competition. Please let me know if you might be able to help out as a judge or a steward! And feel free to forward this to anyone you know who might be interested in participating. The date of the Showdown is Saturday, February 18, 2006. We plan to begin around 11 am, to give out-of-town judges a reasonable start-time. The venue is the St. George Brewing Company's brewery in Hampton, Virginia, right off I-64. Overnight accommodations for out-of-town judges can be arranged. And of course, there will be a post-competition party/pub crawl that is not to be missed! This competition is a BJCP/AHA sanctioned event. The link to information about style categories and the contest is below at.... http://www.hrbts.org/showdown2006.htm Any questions? Hope to hear from you!!! Occasionally am able to nip in > and catch a BOS round after closing but that relies on > a competition running late [...] Nathaniel, you didn't say where your shop is located, but any BJCP members who are shop owners are more than welcome to judge at the Not-Saturday comp that I've been organising every September, the Great Frederick Fair (Maryland). We do our judging on a Sunday afternoon/ evening, and that's "makeable" for a lot of people (so long as the Ravens/Skins games are not on, that is). In fact, I see some Friday (evening) comps, and Sunday comps listed now in various cities, like San Diego, Kansas City, and Chico, CA. Maybe Edmonton's comp will extend to Sunday. Is your shop open on Friday nights or Sundays? Admittedly, working on Saturday does reduce your chances to get to a comp, but there are some around on other days. As to Lyle Brown's notes on putting brew shop owners in as judges, I'll plead a special and similar case: The winning beers at our Frederick Fair are brewed at Barely & Hops and Brewer's Alley brewpubs here. As a matter of respect for the brewmasters there and also acknowledgement that they're the ones who will have to sell 300 gallons of the winning beer, we do give them first dibs at a seat at the Best of Show table. They often pass on the chance -- I hope it's partly because they trust our judging -- but they're always invited. By the way -- to the BJCP web guys: I see that the 12th Annual Boston Homebrew Competition is listed as being on 02/06/2006! Yikes! It's on 02/18/2006! Likewise, the Transatlantic Showdown in Hampton, VA, is listed as 02/19 when its web site says 02/18. And Babble Brewoff in Lincolnshire, IL, is listed as 02/24 when its site proclaims 02/25. Oh my, my, what is going on here??? Am I reading this right?
