Most times, when a competition organizer calls for judges, the name of the competition is given but the location either isn't given or is vague (i.e., Northeast, Weiss-Porter Slam-Off, Bay Area Beerfest, Midwest...). Why not prominently list the city? I've judged in competitions 150 miles from home, but I don't instinctively know where you are if you don't tell me WHERE YOU ARE. You might just have better luck getting judges if you're a little more informative. Thanks for indulging one of my smaller pet peeves. The Madison Homebrewers and Tasters Guild invites you to help judge at our 20th Annual Big and Huge Homebrew Competition, starting at 9am on Saturday, 28-April-2007, at the Great Dane Pub and Brewing Company's Fitchburg branch. The Big and Huge is a long-running celebration of the utmost gravity, but with a small change in its 20th year. We used to define “Big” ales and lagers as beginning at 1.050 original gravity, and “Huge” at 1.060 to as much as your yeast can tolerate. Given the spectrum of today's craft beer offerings, some felt that 1.050 was just a bit too commonplace now to be considered “Big,” so the minimum gravity for entries to this year's event has been bumped up to 1.060, with “Huge” raised to over 1.070. With all those big (and especially huge) beers, we'll need a lot of judges to keep flight sizes reasonable and invite you to join us in judging some exceptionally good beers. MHTG will provide breakfast snacks and lunch to judges, as well as judge appreciation gifts from our sponsors.* For judges visiting from out-of-town, we are also offering up to $25 in reimbursement for your motor fuel expenses. “Beds for Brewers” arrangements can be made for visiting judges if needed... particularly those who opt for our optional pub crawl. In addition to our host, the Great Dane, we thank the following companies for sponsoring prizes and judge gifts: Ale Asylum; All About Beer Magazine; Beersmith; Briess Malt and Ingredients Company; Cynmar Corporation; Freshops; Glasses, Mugs and Steins; Hop Union CBS LLC; J.T. Whitney's Pub & Brewery; Logic Inc.; Malt Advocate Magazine; Midwest Supplies; Northern Brewer; Siebel Institute of Technology; Sierra Nevada Brewing Company; White Labs Inc.; Williams Brewing Company Contact Mark Schnepper at mschnepper`at`yahoo.com to volunteer to judge. Now go have a beer! Bob Paolino P.S. Before anyone writes to point it out to us, yes, we are aware that this is the same weekend as the AHA-NHC regional first round judging in Chicago. We regret the schedule conflict, but we selected our competition date before the exact AHA dates were announced and, quite honestly, had very little flexibility between the weekends of tax deadline and Mothers' Day, with a BJCP exam and Great Taste of the Midwest ticket sales dates occupying two of those three intervening weekends, leaving only the 28th during that window. But if you can't spare a full weekend for a trip to Chicago and a day in Madison, the Craft Beer Capital of the Midwest, fits your schedule, we encourage you to join us. (And we hope to avoid a similar conflict with the AHA event next year, because we like to go judge that, too. :-) ) Now go have a beer, Bob Paolino "Are Canadians just Americans who carry hockey sticks instead of guns, or is there more to it than that?" --"This Canadian Existence" Wisconsin Public Radio ( ) ASCII ribbon campaign X against HTML e-mail: / \ Friends don't send friends HTML-bloated messages!
